Lowestoft’s iconic Gull Wing Bridge

Eccles supplies Lowestoft’s Gull Wing Bridge Scheme with the new AquaDeck Bridge Drainage System

Contratista - Farrans Construction

Cliente - Consejo del Condado de Suffolk

Product: 1,500 AquaDeck units

Eccles’ AquaDeck ductile iron combined kerb bridge drainage system is being installed on the iconic new Gull Wing Bridge in Lowestoft.

In total over 1,500 AquaDeck units are being installed to service this prestigious new structure, which is being delivered by Suffolk County Council and built by Farrans.

The impressive Gull Wing Bridge will provide a much-needed third crossing over Lake Lothing to link Waveney Drive to Denmark Road and Peto Way.

As well as attracting new investment opportunities and helping regenerate the area, the project will also reduce traffic congestion in the town.

Installation of AquaDeck units

The AquaDeck system has been chosen to drain both sides of the carriageway.

Manufactured from high strength ductile iron, AquaDeck has been designed for use on bridges and elevated highways or where construction depths are limited, enabling surface and sub surface drainage all in one unit.

Installation of this system is quick and easy – AquaDeck is laid on bedding compound and adjusted to line and level. And once installed its special two-part design allows easy access for cleaning at any part along the entire drainage run.

As well as supplying the units, Eccles have also designed four bespoke AquaDeck expansion joint drainage components, which will cross the multi element movement joints at four corner locations at both North and South abutments.

Since the joints on the bridge are large module types, and much more complicated to cross with our units than the smaller metal runner or plug joints that we usually come across, we kept close consultation with the contractor and BridgeCare whilst designing the expansion joints to successfully ensure complete compatibility between our drainage system and the bridge expansion joints.

The delivery and installation of these bespoke expansion joint assemblies, which now accommodate longitudinal and transverse movements on the structure, will complete the works.
